Canada … discover our diverse natureDiversity is without question a fundamental characteristic of Canada, historically, culturally & environmentally: 1. Historically … Canada's diversity was reflected in the 56 First nations that first inhabited its lands. When European settlement began, Canada opted to pursue roads of co-existence by ensuring the concept of cultural diversity was enshrined in the earliest Canadian laws. Today, Canada's commitments to laws protecting diversity – including the world's first Multiculturalism Policy – extend far beyond our country's borders. 2. Culturally …From the wonderful variety of faces in our more than 200 ethnic groups, to the more than 140 languages on our streets, Canadians reflect a cultural, ethnic & linguistic diversity found nowhere else on earth today! The diversity of Canadian people contributes much to the richness of our nation's cultural & political fabric – today, over 16% of Canada's parliament was actually born outside the country! … Cultural diversity in Canada is a richness that grows constantly as nearly 250,000 immigrants are invited from all corners of the world each year. 3. Environmentally … From rugged mountains, coastlines & rain forests, to deserts, volcanoes & icebergs, Canada represents one of the world's most diverse natural landscapes. Despite these vast areas of our natural wilderness however, Canada also remains one of the world's most urban countries – nearly 80% of our population lives in one of Canada's 25 main metropolitan regions. Today, Canadian values – such as achieving health for all through diversity, inclusiveness & equilibrium – continue to be inspired by the energy of our diverse surroundings.Canada … discover our creative natureAs people have encountered the challenges & opportunities of life in Canada, our creative nature has evolved in ways that reflect both our land & people. Today, Canadian creativity – through our artists, innovators, & entrepreneurs – reflects a truly unique voice. 1. creative arts … In the past 30 years, Canada's artists have seen their work, books, music, performances & more become favourites all around the world. Among other things, Canada is currently home to:
Canada … discover our global natureCanadians have long known the importance of nurturing humans' collaborative spirit – the very health & progress of our communities has relied on our ability to build bridges between the different cultures, distances & challenges of our huge nation. Gathering different peoples to work together & solve our problems calmly has simply evolved to become part of the "Canadian way." There is little surprise then that Canada's approach on the world stage echoes Canadians' inherently collaborative approach to things. Today, Canada's idealism – our concern for the health of communities, of nations, and our willingness to support multilateral approaches to solving global problems - defines us in the world. And although we may not always be the biggest player on that world stage, we remain an important one as we contribute global leadership in many important areas including peacebuilding, environmental stewardship, democracy & governance, sustainable development & education: 1. peacebuilding & security ...Canada's contributions to world peace & human security not only include the work of Canadian peacekeepers & the ratification of the land mines treaty, but the establishment of the International War Crimes Court & the proposal that led to the creation of UN peacekeeping missions. Canada's long peacekeeping traditions & the fact that it is regularly asked to bring a voice of mediation to the world is a great source of pride for Canada. 2. environmental stewardship ...As the home for 20% of the world's remaining wilderness, 20% of the world's remaining fresh water reserves & 10% of the world's forests, Canada has an unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. In addition to ratifying the Kyoto protocol, Canada was the first industrialized country to ratify the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. 3. democracy & governance ...Canada has taken a leading role in advocating collective action to protect the security of individuals and human rights at the United Nations. We have taken a leading role in redefining sovereignty in the world. And for the past 3 years, Canada has also remained the international leader in e-Government – today, our governance systems remain models for many nations of the world. 4. Sustainable development ...Canada contributes to the protection the earth's equilibrium by reserving large natural regions of our country & by promoting sustainable practises at home & around the world. A recent study conducted by the World Economic Forum, which analysed over 122 countries, positioned Canada alongside Finland, Norway and Sweden as a top world leader in the area of sustainable development. 5. Education & learning ...With its traditional emphasis on human development & its high standards for educational opportunity, Canada is a natural home for the world's highest percentage of post-secondary graduates & the world's top 5 achievers in the areas of reading, math & science. Canadians know that this strong educational performance – significantly higher than countries with greater per capita education spending, including the USA – is directly related to our emphasis on social values. It is a wisdom we bring to our promotion of education & human rights in the world.CANADA … discover our true nature! This is but a small glimpse at "modern" Canada … Canadians of course invite you to keep discovering our country as it is today … how we have grown up, how we are growing still & how we have much to offer our friends in the international community!Sources: Government of Canada www.canada.gc.ca Canadian Embassy in Warsaw www.canada.pl Peter and Elizabeth Odrakiewicz private collection1987- 2007
